Benefits of a Dentist Providing Same Day Crowns

 In Dental Tips and Advice

Did you discover recently that you need a dental crown?

You’re not alone. Dental crowns are one of the most common dental procedures in the United States. In fact, nearly 2.3 million dental crowns are made in the United States every year.

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that cover weakened or damaged teeth to improve strength, function and esthetics of natural teeth.

Dentists typically provide traditional dental crowns or same day crowns. Each type of crown involves their own unique production and delivery processes.

But which type of crown do patients prefer?

More people prefer having same day dental crowns over traditional crowns. The benefits of same day dental crowns compared to traditional ones are unparalleled.

How exactly do same day dental crowns work and why are more people looking for dentists who offer them? Let’s take a look!

Traditional dental crowns can take weeks – and even months – to complete. The process for traditional crowns involves significant reduction or cutting-down, of the natural tooth to be crowned.  The dentists then takes an impression of the tooth to be crowned using an impression material in a dental tray.  The impression is sent to a dental lab where the crown will be fabricated.  Finally, the dentist will fabricate a temporary crown that will cover the tooth for the 2-3 weeks it typically takes the dental lab to make the crown.

At the second appointment, dentists remove the temporary crown before cementing the permanent crown. Permanent crowns are either made of porcelain, metal or a combination of both.

Unlike traditional crowns, same day dental crowns only take one appointment. CEREC crown technology has made this possible through computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer-aided design (CAD).

The CAD involves a three-dimensional software scan that produces precise measurements and contours of teeth. Dentists can then make a permanent crown based on the digital scans using the CAM milling unit. This design and production is typically completed in a two our appointment.

Cerec technology saves patients valuable time by cutting the number of office visits in half, but also allows dentists who use in-office crown technology to be more conservative in their treatment.  Because the crown is completed in one single visit, Cerec dentists do not need to reduce, or cut down, a significant amount of tooth structure that is usually required to keep a temporary crown on.  In addition to the minimally-invasive approach of taking away less tooth structure for the crown there is also no need to give a second round of dental anesthetic, or numbing, to the tooth for a second appointment when the traditional crown is cemented.

Most importantly to patients, by avoiding expensive dental lab bills and taking control of the production costs, same-day crown dentists can offer more affordable pricing for single visit crowns.

Long gone are the days of temporary crowns and multiple dentist visits. Crown technology has made it possible for patients to receive dental crowns in a matter of hours. By choosing a dentist who specializes in same day crowns, you can save time, money and the discomfort of more dental injections!
